Shopping around for a self storage unit can be rough. There are so many options to consider, so many locations, so many unit sizes, and so many optional amenities to cloud your decision making process. Thus, it makes a great deal of sense if you are feeling a little bit of stress as you are shopping around for the ideal unit. Thankfully, though, you are not going to have much trouble finding the perfect unit if you do just a little bit of background research before you pick up the phone to start calling around. Indeed, with a little bit of knowledge at your command, you can root out all of the local self storage facilities that are going to be able to keep your belongings safe, and with relatively little trouble. As you are reading through this article, do yourself a favor and jot down a few helpful tips for when you are calling around.

The first thing that you are going to want to keep in mind, here, is that you are never going to want to rent a self storage unit that does not come with all of the excellent, industry leading security features that have been developed over the years. And what, you might be wondering, are these amazing security features? Well, reader, that is a pretty simple question to answer. First and foremost, you are going to want to be sure that your unit comes equipped with video surveillance cameras. These cameras are going to give your property manager an excellent feel for what is happening on his or her property, meaning that you are never going to have to worry about someone sneaking into your unit. You might also consider renting a unit from a property that keeps a security guard on site, watching over said video surveillance cameras. If you want to make doubly sure that your belongings are going to be safe, then you are going to want to be sure that you are renting a unit that is going to come equipped with a door alarm. A door alarm is going to emit a loud, alarming sound when someone attempts to break your lock or jar your door, meaning that burglars and crooks are not going to stand a chance at making their way into your unit. Finally, here, you are going to want to be sure that you are renting a unit that has a great store on site. You should be able to buy all of the boxes, high security locks, and bubble wrap that you need without leaving your property, lest you decide that you are all right with wasting your valuable time and money.

Of course, if your belongings require any special accommodations such as a climate controlled environment, then you are going to have to be sure that you are asking about these, too, as you are calling around. It is easy to forget that some of your belongings are going to require special attention, as you are likely rather stressed out when you are calling around. Know, though, that you are not going to be happy with the result of storing temperature sensitive belongings, for example, in a unit that is not going to protect them from seasonal variations in temperature and humidity. Ask all of the right questions, though, and you are not going to have to worry about ruining your belongings while they are in your unit.

At the end of the day, tips like these are going to make the difference between renting a safe unit, and renting a unit that will not protect your belongings.
