We called him the junk man. Every morning he would come to our Vanier storage facility in Quebec, Canada. He was an older man who was skinny and not very well built, but boy, could he move and carry a whole lot of stuff. He collected anything metal or steel or aluminum. Every morning he would ask if there was something metal on the property, he could have. It turned out pretty well, though because if customers did leave things on the property that he could use, he would take them. Customers would leave things on the property, inside their storage spaces, and the dumpster. Some times people who were moving out that day from their storage spaces they would leave junk that they either did not want anymore, or could nor fit in their trucks or cars. This happens a lot on storage properties, because people are always moving in or out. Mattresses are the one thing they leave the most behind, because mattresses when they are not covered and stored properly, are ruined. We have lifted a whole lot of them in our time as storage managers. We wish the junk man were in the bed mattress business too.
We have lifted so many of the mattresses that we have become experts on how to lift them. You grab them tightly from the front, flip them on your shoulder, and try to balance them perfectly on your shoulder. Vanier storage place renters and customers have seen us do this quite often. The customer had moved out but the vice was so heavy, he had to leave it. He told us, which was nice, and we said we would take care of it for him. He came right over in his beat up truck and parked in front of the vice. The vice weighed hundreds of pounds, it was very heavy. The junk man studied it for a while and as he was going to try to move it, we were called to the office to help a customer. When we went back to the vice, the junk man was gone and so was the vice.
