When the choice is between giving away or selling the table your grandma gave you – the table where you remember baking cookies as a little girl, eating holiday dinners and gathering around to play games – either choice seems like a loss to your heart.

Before you give away or sell your family furniture stop and realize that the self storage world has a place for you to keep those memories safely stores away until you find room for them again in your home. After all, there is no limit to the room in your heart so why should you leave yourself feeling empty because of the square footage of a house?

You can rest assured that Grandma’s furniture will be safe when you leave it in the care of a self storage facility. Some of these properties offer more security than your residence probably has. Of course, there are some self storage properties that are not safe or secure. This makes your goal when shopping around to find self storage properties that offer the security and bring you the peace of mind you need.

If you are like most of us, you don’t know very much about the ins and outs of what self storage has to offer. So let’s take a moment to learn a few features and amenities and how they may benefit you.

First of all, any self storage property you consider should be either 1) completely fenced around the entire property. The fence should be a sturdy, tall security fencing designed to keep animals and intruders out and there is only one way in or out – through the gate. Or 2) all indoors, meaning the individual storage units are inside a large warehouse, so there is only one way in and out of the property – the building door.

These perimeter defense features, whether fencing or a warehouse building, means that only tenants can enter. This goes a long way in security because only a limited number of people who are also tenants of the facility will be able to come and go.

Another wonderful feature of the most advanced self storage properties is video surveillance. The self storage manager is going to be your best defense against hazards and the like, but even he or she cannot be everywhere at all times. By installing cameras in plain sight of all the tenants, it will deter any would-be-thieves and make them think again. However, if they are foolish enough to try anything, the storage facility will have it all on tape. (Although not funny in the least, this would make for one stupid criminal who may or may not end up on some “World’s Dumbest Crooks” TV show.)

Every self storage property, even the least secure facility, should offer you exclusive access to your storage unit. This means that you should be the only key holder, aside from other friends or family you choose to give access to. However, this is where the security of your storage unit relies on you. Do not give a key or PIN number to a friend or family member you cannot trust. Experiencing theft or loss because you gave another person access to your storage unit will be something you’ll regret for a long time to come.

Finally, you can buy peace of mind and security by taking out a self storage insurance policy with the company. Most high-end storage properties sell a protection plan or insurance option that will give you coverage over negligence or loss. Of course, you should read the restrictions and rules before signing any policy or agreement.

These are just three ways to rent a safer self storage unit. You will be able to find storage units like these in your town, so choose the one that makes you feel most comfortable and safe when you think about storing Grandma’s table and all the other family pieces you have collected.
